Characterized as having a strong and rhythmic understructure, solos, call-and-response patterns-the blues print of improvisation puts its stamp on the celebrated musical genre of jazz. A proud part of African-American culture, the history of jazz traces its roots back to the United States during the early part of the 20th century. Alas, after many jam sessions and much improvisation, jazz appreciation in the state of Rhode Island prevailed through the creation of the Newport Jazz Festival, held three days every August so residents and visitors alike can tune in to its inventive style, creative genius, and all that jazz.
